May 2011 Art Hop Artist, Shelby Gamble
Artist Bio
REPRESENTED BY JAN DE LA TORRE
Shelby Gamble is self taught artist. He is influenced by new contemporary artwork, which includes James Jean, and Kent Williams. He is art is an amalgamation of classic tattoo artwork, pop culture, fashion magazines and Saturday morning cartoons (which he will be caught watching when no one is looking).
Artist Statement
This series of paintings are birthed from the daily tension that I, the misbehaved, the weird, the loud, the crass and the queer, find myself in. Truth be told, this is simply a little boogey man letting out a cry into the night. I explore the duality, sexuality and the vulnerability in my new found theory of the boogey man through acrylic paints. I use blacks and reds to explore carnality moving through levels or darkness, anger and beauty. In this I hope to show we all got a little boogey man in us.
